Ottawa St. Strip Mall Gets New Anchor

If ever there were grounds to break a lease...Remember this bank building on the corner of Ottawa Street and Walker Road? It was razed in the name of progress or something like that. The owner's reasoning was that he would lose a multi-year tenant if he left it up. See here:

and here:

Once again the City fumbled the heritage ball by not protecting this building and so this rock solid bank had to come down to create parking for a new credit union to be incorporated into the existing strip mall. A ten year lease worth $340,000.00. That roughly translates into $34,000.00 per year. Wow.

As it were, the new anchor of that day turned out to be the Ukranian Credit Union. They must have been proud to display their new diggs with visibility flanking all corners. Location, location, location!

Well...As business savvy would have it, things change. Now there is a new anchor for the plaza and it now owns the prestigious location and all of its stunning visibility. See here:

Ukranian Credit Union is in the Background...Somewhere.

The new anchor sits right on the corner of Ottawa and Walker; right where the original Bank of Montreal once stood. It not only obliterates the visibility of the new Ukranian Credit Union; it also plays havoc with traffic visibility.

So what is this new anchor? The truth shall be known! It's a trash pad to house the strip mall's trash containers. Clever isn't it? And a much , much better use than the heritage building it replaces. Yup...Thats business acumen. Most of the garbage it will hide will probably come from the breakfast joint at the other end of the mall (perhaps the true anchor). If they want, the Credit Union can buy advertising on it to identify their new location.
Maybe Windsor really does deserve the moniker: "Garbage Town".

I've been watching this being built with disbelief.

A garbage corral. This is what we tore the old bank down for?

Even by Windsor standards, this is mega-stupid.

Me too, John! An intersection with the highest visibility in Walkerville dedicated to that pitiful garbage enclosure! The owner should be ashamed!

And people wonder why everyone was protesting the demolition of our old bank! There is no faith that developers will act in good conscience any more.

That picture should be sent to every councillor with a caption. "You have been duped".

So-called developers in this city are the main reason this city looks like it was built by communists.

You can blame the Developer but its your City Officials who allowed this to happen. Look at your own Planners and Politicians first. Blaming the Developer is an easy way of letting those who are supposed to represent you off the hook. Developers and property owners are not held accountable by the City. On several post on this blog it has been pointed out that there are several by-law and building violations occurring along Walker Road (right in the back yard of some City Officials) yet nothing is being done. Who is the Planner in charge of Heritage Preservation. Call them to task on these kind of things. In other Cities people would get fired for letting these kind of things happen. In Windsor they they do nothing.

i was horrified to see this go up. I'd like to know who at city hall allowed this structure to go up? Has anyone called to ask? It is absolutely disgraceful.

I'd like to think that this is a bi-product of the City's Building Department not being able to function properly without staff (because of the strike). If that is the case then maybe once the strike is over it is correctable. On the other hand, if this "benefit of the doubt thinking" is correct that means that the Management does not know what they are doing. How much overtime are they getting payed?

Advertising space. L.O.L. I can see it now. "Visit the Ukranian Credit Union. It's conveniently located right behind this garbage container".

I have to agree with anonymous.

Developers and business (typically) will do the very least to be the most profitable.

Our public officials are charged with supervising and administering the bylaws created by elected officials.
