This beauty obviously housed a horse or two. Notice the wooden beam hoist.
All it needs is a wooden block and tackle and a new swinging door to bring it back to glory.
If you pay attention there are always new finds in Old Walkerville. They might be in the form of a garden, of a gate, of a store front, or, in this case a few out buildings that can tell stories about back in the day. Take a look.
This one was probably a carriage house in it's day. Notice the 30 amp mast and socket.
This brick beauty is only 4 years old.
This brick beauty is only 4 years old.
It's owner obviously has tremendous respect for the neighbourhoods history and character.
The slow arches and brick ribbon match those of the main building. Impressive. Kudos.
This building is a rare gem. It is obviously a kit building from who knows what era.
It is 100% steel construction. Roof, siding, doors, all.
Three buckets of tremclad would put this keeper on the map.
Roof and siding. All steel. It screams "paint me" doesn't it?
A good bet might be that the roof was originally red and the building green with red trim.
These buildings have for the most part been sitting "as is" for decades. Do the owners realize their value? One can only wonder. Maybe they like their rustic charm as is. Hopefully they are appreciated and will someday be brought back to their original glory. They will certainly bring Old Walkerville along with them.

Cool! I love it when you post stuff like this!
I found the picture of our carraige house on your site. I just wanted to set in straight that we are not neglecting it! We have been restoring the main house for the past 8 years and $75,000+ in renovations, including a new roof on the main house AND carriage house this year. We are doing the necessary work to the carriage house as needed, including all new wiring, new roof, soffits and gutters. Plans to repaint it are in the works. It is the last and only carriage house/stable on Kildare with 2 levels and has its own historical designation aside from the main house. I welcome you to stop by and see the inside - it is in remarkable shape and includes the original feed bin on the upper level and floor troughs on the lower level for the horses.
To Rob Nelson, good for you! It sounds like you really have a lot of respect for Olde Walkerville, its history and its many charms. It is wonderful that you are preserving your carriage house that way. Quite commendable, indeed! It does take some time, doesn't it, to complete such an undertaking?
To the MOM - the carriage house on Kildare just had a new roof with copper valleys put on - didn't you notice that??? They have been working non-stop on that property and the negative remarks are unfair - obviously, you didn't see that property BEFORE they bought it! It went from an eyesore to one of the nicest houses on the block! Great job - everything looks great and takes time!
To the Third Anonymous, I didn't find the MOM's remarks to be particularly "negative" or "unfair". Aren't you over-reacting just a bit?
To Rob Nelson et al...
Rob...I HAVE been watching your project since you purchased the property and I do commend your dedication to its preservation. In fact, I was seriously considering purchasing that house myself. I would love to take the tour with you and perhaps, if permitted, do a blog post about it.
For the record I was not being negative in any way. I just like to keep Walkervillians thinking about the gems we have.
If you are serious about the tour please e-mail me: MOMnews@hotmail.com
Thanks for posting. Most appreciated.
To Mr Nelson,
You have been doing a fine job with your house and carriage house. MOST of the neighbours truly appreciate your deduction and hard work. Too bad others don't care about their property!!!!!
Thanks, MOM, I will contact you via email about the tour/blog. I just wanted to clarify to all that we have not neglected our "gem". We also share your dedication and enthusiasm with Walkerville and, as you can see, others are very defensive about it!! LOL Thanks to everyone who has commented on the work we have done - we greatly appreciate it!
Thanks again M.O.M. for all the work you do with maintaining this blog for us. It is appreciated.
I truly wish other areas of the city had residents that cared as much for their property as they do in Walkerville.
Every single home owner in my neighbourhood cares about their houses. But every single landlord who does not live here neglects their property.
If they don't wan tot maintain then sell it!
Not all landlords neglect their property so I would advise against making such a blanket statement like that, ME.
To ME...
Not all landlords neglect their properties although most could do more to preserve the genuine character.
For those who are repeat and constant offenders there is one very effective mechanism available to you. The Property Standards Committee. A quick 311 call will get you in contact. They handle everything from uncut grass to unpainted eves, broken screens etc. They keep landlords hopping on the right track.
