Walkerville loses another brownstone to fire. Firemen from Fire House 2 (right across the street) really had to rush into their wellies this morning. Around 4:30 A.M. a fully engaged fire broke out in the building currently housing The Flag Store Walker and Richmond). Fire quickly engulfed the entire building from front to back. Three or Four separate businesses including the Flag Shop and a tool and die shop were decimated. This building used to be the home of YKK zippers and fasteners. Ladder trucks from number two and from other stations were called to the scene to bombard the flames with thousands of gallons of water. Fire units were positioned along all sides of the building, especially on the south side where they were protecting MacDonald and White from encroaching flames. Firefighters were still on the scene at 10:00 A.M. this morning. The single story building burned completely to the ground leaving no corner untouched. Street speculation is pointing to arson. Power to the adjacent neighbourhood along St. Luke is out. Thick, acrid smoke has blanketed the North Drouillard Road area. Fire fighters were just starting to wrap up around noon on Saturday.
