Arugula!...Arugula!

Right now, on a vacant lot on Wyandotte Street you can find a patch of Arugula. The exact location won't be given out here but it is in the heart of the Old Walkerville BIA (Business Improvement Area).

So if your in the mood for some tasty salad fixins you might want to grab a basket and venture off on your own culinary scavenger hunt. One hint. "Out of the ashes comes the new".

Good Luck and Bon appetit!

Cute Blog!

No, really, this guy really does believe he is the Mayor of Monmouth. It's his way or no way, or at least that is what I hear through the grapevine.

I see you are not an arugula fan. Perhaps sour grapes are more to your liking. The guy writes a blog. For better or worse. Thats all.

I live on Monmouth. And the title of "Mayor" was a joke given by several of the neighbors that stuck. As far as "his way or the highway". Not even close. This is not a concentration camp. Why are you even bringing up "what you've heard". Sad very sad.

You heard it the the grape vine?
Are you just about to lose your mind?

actually he isn't the "Mayor" of Monmouth, but I'm sure if we 'elected' a formal Mayor of Monmouth, it would cost us more and we would recieve less.

if it was my way or the highway, you would just get censored and we wouldn't have to read your drivel.

And I thought Arugula is bitter! Obviously there's 'closet anger' that's fighting to be heard.

Good thing the blog has taken on a great topic such as arugula and has proven once again-greens are gross!

ARUGULA PESTO
Hands-on time: 20 minutes
Time to table: 20 minutes
Makes 1 1/2 cups

6 cups fresh arugula, washed well and allowed to dry

1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup almonds
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan (I like to keep about half the Parmesan in tiny cubes for more substance)
Salt & pepper to taste

Wash the greens. While they dry, in a small skillet, let the olive oil warm on MEDIUM. Add the almonds and let cook in the oil, watching the heat so not to burn, til the almonds turn golden.

While the almonds cook, whiz the arugula in the food processor - you may need to work in batches. Add the almond/oil mixture and Parmesan whiz to combine. Season to taste.

Why is Walkerville/Old Walkerville being renamed the Walkerville Distillery District?? There is already a "Distillery District" in Toronto - can't the Walkerville BIA be original? What is wrong with calling it the Walkerville District or just keeping it Walkerville?? Isn't Walkerville a "district" of Windsor? Isn't Riverside a "district" of Windsor..etc? If you want to rename Walkerville, which most people who LIVE in Walkerville think is wrong, try to come up with something that is original and doesn't sound like a back alley area. Why doesn't it go to a vote for the actual RESIDENTS of Walkerville, not people who happen to work in Walkerville or operate a business. We, the residents, are proud of Walkerville/Old Walkerville and it has been called that since its beginning and should remain that way. Just the plain name of "Walkerville" says it all.....

Thank you,
PROUD residents of WALKERVILLE.

There is a Walkerville BIA meeting on Thursday, Aug 30th. If you oppose them renaming our area, please send a letter or email to the Walkerville BIA. What is sad, is even if there are enough people who oppose it at their holier than thou meeting, it is the BIA vote ONLY that will apply. Show them that the residents of Walkerville want to keep it "Walkerville". Look at the hideous banners we currently have on Wyandotte St - that is what their decision process consists of. Yeah, isn't a big "W" on banners original?? Gee, doesn't Windsor start with a "W"?? Does the W stand for Walkerville or Windsor?? I'm sure visitors to the area won't know - another "original" idea from the Walkerville BIA. Put the votes to the residents concerning our area. Keep the BIA voting only for flowers, trees & events - not PERMANENTLY changing our area!

I googled The Walkerville BIA and noticed that they are already calling it the distillery District. For how long I don't know. These people are obviously thinking too hard. Is the purpose of this upcoming meeting about re-naming the area? Are they talking soley about the BIA area or Old Walkerville at large. Either way I believe they are overstepping their boundaries. What details can you offer? Looking for as much info as possible. E-mail me at MOMnews@hotmail.com if you wish. Thanks

Hello....I see you read my comments on your blog regarding the Walkerville BIA renaming the business area. I have been in contact with several business owners and they are not amused that the Walkerville BIA is trying to get the Distillery District name passed without anybody knowing. The meeting is this Thursday, Aug 30th at 6:30pm at the new REFINE gym (old Icon building on Wyandotte). Only BIA members can vote and obviously voice an opinion. Some of the business owners want the BIA to know that a lot of people are not happy with this. They know that the leaders of the BIA will bulldoze their opinions and force the name to be passed. The name "Walkerville" says it all and to change or edit it is WRONG.
Next year, Walkerville will be 150 years old - why don't they concentrate on that ? (1858-2008) The BIA thinks that changing the name will help business. Sorry to disappoint them, but changing the name will not make the troubles go away. Focusing on improvements and next year's 150th anniversary will help tremendously. How many areas can actually have a 150 year anniversary? I am hoping that more people come forward to let the Walkerville BIA know that changing the name is not what the area needs or wants. Everyone knows where Walkerville is in Windsor - adding "The Distillery District" will only add confusion. Toronto has these "district" names because they don't have unique names for their areas such as Windsor does (Walkerville, Riverside, Sandwich, etc.). The Walkerville BIA should concentrate on flowers, events and visible improvements - not change a 150 year old area that has a solid name base AS IS. Save the money on changing the name to pay for HANGING BASKETS THAT CAN BE WATERED. Those are the visible improvements that help a business district - not renaming it. Look at the waste of money the hideous street banners were. Who thought that the pink bubbles on the banners represent Walkerville? Is the "W" on the banners for Windsor or Walkerville? We know the answer, but do visitors? It's time to let the BIA know that they are losing touch with what Walkerville really needs.
