Angel in the Hood
Speedy chowing down at Alley Party 2006
Godspeed Murray Thurlow.
This weekend our beloved "Speedy" was re-purposed to another place. If you think about it, he went out on the wave of a solar storm. Fitting and appropriate. Good for him. Good for all of us. He was our block anchor. A man who has been in the hood longer than anyone. A good soul who everyone checked in with just about every day. Speed was usually on his porch when everyone left in the morning and when they returned in the afternoon. He was our weather guy. With pinpoint accuracy he could tell you if it was going to rain or shine and he claimed it was all in his bones. This loveable man had a huge heart for his family and for everyone on Monmouth Road. Especially the kids who could not wait to catch him on any day of the week. He was good to them and they loved him. He attended our social gatherings, he came to the block parties (he usually brought a salad) and he could socialize and mingle with the best of them. The most fun thing was to listen to his stories about the Monmouth Road and the Old Walkerville of the past. Speedy was there and his reference was invaluable. He even gets credit for the title of this blog.
Its hard to fathom that Speedy is gone but its easy to think that he is still with us here in the hood. Your friends and neighbours of Monmouth Road will always miss you Speed but we will never forget you. Godspeed dear friend.
